Reflection 4: Course planning and syllabus design

I agree with the statement that choosing course content is probably the most basic issue in course design. Even though detailed procedure how to choose course content was suggested in the chapter 6 I read, I became worried about myself as a course planner for our language program because I do not think I have sufficient knowledge about how children learn the second language, what I should teach children etc. Even though I understand some of young learners’ characteristics I should learn more about the process of their learning. I think children may learn the second language differently from adults so that language program of course for children should be different from that for adults.
As for selecting a syllabus framework, I prefer an integrated syllabus. As mentioned in the chapter 6, every framework has its advantages and drawbacks so when some frameworks are integrated it could complement each other. Even though I do not think it is important to teach grammar explicitly to children, I think grammatical syllabus should be integrated into the syllabus with other syllabus framework such as topic or functional. The textbooks used in public schools are organized with functional syllabus framework. I think it would be better to include a topic-based syllabus because it may facilitate comprehension and motivate learners.
