I think that the curriculum framework which Laura Hull developed focused on learning rather than teaching. As a language learner, I wish I could have been involved in her language program because I agree on her idea: language study is a long-term ongoing process so that it can be most effective when self-directed by the learner. For that, she set up an ongoing learning plan for students to continue to study language even after leaving the program. If a language program helps learners to know their learning style and to use effective learning strategies, they will benefit a lot from the program in the long run.
She also tried to reconcile the expectations and needs in the development of the curriculum. In addition, she took many forms of evaluation as she thought evaluation plays important role in course development. As a language program developer, I should consider the importance of needs assessment and evaluation because by reflecting learners’ need and their evaluation I could make the language course more effective and successful.
I usually complained about my teaching situation without trying to solve the challenges. In developing a curriculum framework, Laura Hull tried to define the challenges first. Then she tried to figure out how to meet the challenges and formalize the solution. These three steps guide me what I should do when I develop or design a course.
In sum, like her curriculum framework I think learner training is what I should include to my language course to guide learners to successful language study. I, also, should consider the three steps when I design a course.
